This week I chat with Mary Shannon, the CEO of Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters. Mary and I first met 10 years when we got together to plan a fundraiser for BBBBS in Wichita. It was a huge success, surpassing both our expectations and our dreams. We have continued to put on this gala (called The Soiree) every other year since then. Thanks to talented chefs like Amy Brandwein, Elizabeth Falkner, Charleen Badman, Kathleen Blake, William Dissen, Lori Hashimoto, and JJ Johnson, an extremely generous Wichita community and dozens of volunteers, we have raised over $5 million. In the process of all this, Mary has become a close friend. In this interview I learned what advice she tries to live by and the importance of taking time for yourself.

I originally thought these Substack interviews would be solely with food industry people but Mary is so smart and insightful I wanted to include her. I am hope there will be more conversations with “nonfood” people I admire. She does make a mean cheesecake and taught me how to use an air fryer so she does cook!
