I first learned about the chef Katharine Elder (@mrselderlsie)when Peter, my husband, returned from a business trip to Wichita, Kansas. He had met Katharine there, who with her farmer husband, George, own Elderslie Farm which includes a u-pick blackberry farm, a seasonal cafe and a year round restaurant. Although I don't go with Peter on many of his work trips, I jumped at the chance to join him the next time he went to Kansas. Katharine and I hit it off from the start. Not just with food but our love for travel, vegetables and dishes. We have cooked together in Kansas, Arizona, New York, Florida, California, and Italy. For this conversation that took place a month ago, we were sitting on the floor down the hall from the business center at the Inn at Spanish Bay in Monterey, California in between events for Pebble Beach Wine and Food. The photo was taken near Barzano, Italy where we were cooking at Poggio Verde for guests.
