This is such a beautiful tribute to your friend, Emily. Reading "one of the reasons I cooked was to make people happy, but it was mostly performed in hyperdrive with the thought of the end goal overriding the process" gave me a jolt of been there/done that, and not in a proud way. Thank you for sharing your memories, and for the tender lessons tucked into this piece.

Oh, Emmy, I’m so sorry for your loss. This was a lovely tribute to Lisa. I was lucky to meet her just once—when Trevor and I were visiting California you brought us to her house for dinner. Sadly I don’t remember what we ate (I probably didn’t appreciate it anyway), but I do remember being in awe of her built-in bookshelves. ❤️

Emily, thanks for such a sweet tribute to warm and generous Lisa.

It was always a treat for our huge LDE-SF group to be welcomed into her home for Sunday brunch, her magnificent kitchen the perfect setting for us to mingle with new members and catch up with favorite colleagues.

I'll cherish the memory of you telling our gathering one year about your take on marking a "significant birthday"--and later, at the dining room table, signing your latest book on that subject. You were radiant. And Lisa seemed so pleased. Thank you, Lisa. Rest in peace, honey.

There's something else I want to mention. I remember meeting Lisa at one of your Christmas holiday parties many years ago. She made the most delicious Lamb meatballs I have ever tasted. They were divine. I remember her quiet and humble demeanor as I complimented her on them. She seemed like a very special lady. How fortunate you are to be able to call her your friend.

Emmy: I am sorry for your loss. Losing a girlfriend is a heavy on the heart experience and doesn't ever go away, it just mellows with time. When you take Lisa's cookbook off of your bookshelf to make something of hers, you will remember her fondly with a smile and a nod.
